TOUR OF VICTORIA.
DUKE IN THE COUNTRY. Received November 1, 12.35 p.m. MELBOURNE, Nov. 1. Thoroughly refreshed after his spell at Ercildioune, the Duke of Gloucester is now touring Northern Victoria, where lie is experiencing the hottest weather since arriving in Australia. The shade temperature at an open-air reception at Mildura was 100 degrees.
This district is the California of Australia and the Duke was greatly interested in the orange-growing and dried fruit activities in the fertile Murray Valley. At Ouyen the Duke received a welcome from the soldier settlers. It was explained to the Duke that settlers, despite tlieir physical disabilities and unkind seasons, were proving Empire builders in peace no less thaai in war.
