WRESTLER IN COURT.
CASE AT AUCKLAND. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Nov. 1. Unable to sail with a lady friend for America to fulfil his wrestling engagements there because of his arrest by a detective, Meynell Blomfield, aged 29, appeared in the Police Court today charged with attempting to obtain a passport by a false pretence, that the signature “L. Blomfield” was his wife’s. Lily May Balenzuela, aged 24, was charged with making a false passport declaration. The evidence showed that Blomfield had been separated from his wife for five years and he had been paying her £2 10s for maintenance, which was paid up. He had a five months’ wrestling contract in America and admitted that he proposed taking his lady friend with him and, to simplify entry to America, had described her as his wife to overcome the difficulty of finding the necessary 1000 dollar bond. He said he had no intention of evading the maintenance payments and had entered into a surety of £2OO that the payments would be kept up during his absence.
The Magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt), who expressed the opinion that there was no reason why the young woman should not call herself “L. Blomfield” if she wished, said there was no need to deal with the case too strictly. He reduced the charge to one of attempted false pretences and fined Blomfield £2. The woman was convicted and discharged on the payment of £8 5s for the wife’s expenses as a witness.
