MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

A WELLINGTON CASE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Nov. 1. David James Richards, aged 54, a retired professor, was fined by Mr E. Page, S.M., £lO to-day for contempt of Court. It was stated that a disobedience summons was issued in September in connection with maintenance orders against Richards, but the service could not be effected because defendant would not reveal his whereabouts and it was necessary to apply for a warrant of apprehension, which was executed yesterday. Richards continually interrupted the proceedings, saying the money had been paid, which apparently had been done shortly before, but counsel contended the offence of contempt was complete at the time defendant failed to pay the money. There was now another six weeks’ arrears.

The Magistrate said there appeared to be wilful default and imposed a sentence of a month’s gaol on'each of two informations, with a direction for release on payment of the arrears. For contempt Richards was fined £lO. He was dragged from the dock protesting wildly that lie could not pay.
