OBITUARY
MR E. N. BUDDEN. Deep regret extending to many parts of the Dominion was felt in the sudden passing early on Sunday morning at his residence, 65 Waldegrave Street, of Mr Ernest North Budden. The late Mr Budden had been a resident of Palmerston North for about 17 years, and his death has removed one who was highly esteemed in the community. He was for some years associated with Mr W. Hunter, when the latter was secretary of the Manawatu executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, and upon Mr Hunter’s resignation about 10 years ago assumed that office, holding it a.t the time of his death. Largely by virtue of this position he came into contact with a big proportion of the farming community and in this regard he will be sadly missed as a courteous and painstaking officer. In Lodge activities the late Mr Budden was widely known. He had been connected with the Loyal Orange Institution for about 27 years and had attended nearly all the annual meetings, being regarded as one of its mainstays, being a Past Grand Master. He was als.o a Past Master of the Christchurch Lodge. He was instructor to the La-dies’ Lodge at Levin at the time of his death. The Masonic Lodge had also earned Mr Budden’s earnest support and lie was regarded as a prominent member of that fraternity. He was also an affiliated member of the Rechabite Lodge. Part of Mr Budden’s time was spent at the Manawatu Heads, and he had evinced an active interest in the Improvement Society for increasing the popularity of the beach. For several years past he had also been a member of the Takaro Bowling, Croquet, and Tennis Club. Mr Budden also held a lengthy association with the Cuba Street Methodist Church. The esteem in which the deceased gentleman was held was shown yesterday afternoon when the funeral took place. Well over 40 vehicles oemprised the cortege and there was a wealth of beautiful floral tributes. Rev. 11. L. Richards, minister of the Cuba Street Church, conducted the services, while the Orange Lodge and the Masonic Lodge also participated. The pall-bear-ers at the residence, representing the Orange Lodge, were Messrs H. Hunter, H. Cole, A. Learner, H. Smithers, A. Donald, and Rev. G. Knowles Smith, the last four being Past Masters. At the graveside the pall-bearers’ representing the Masonic Lodge, were Messrs G. G. Priest, A. J. Elliott, A. W. Thompson, C B. Williamson, R. C. Donald, and R. W. Ramsay. The Masonic ceremony was conducted by Wor. Bros. Priest, W. W. Coutts. J. A. Grant, and P. S. Larcomb. There were representatives of the Orange Lodge from as far away as Dannevirke, Masterton, Wanganui, Marton, Woodvilie, and Wellington. The late Mr Budden leaves to mourn his passing Mrs Budden and a family of two daughters and two sons. These are Mrs F. A. Ellis (Palmerston North), Miss Gwen Budden, Mr E. Budden (Wanganui River), and Mr F. Budden (Palmerston North). To them will be extended the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement.
