FIRST GOLF TEST.
BRITAIN BEATS AUSTRALIA
SYDNEY, Oct. 29
Britain beat Australia in the first golf test by four matches to two. On Saturday both sides won two singles, but Britain won both foursomes today. The foursomes resulted:—
Hon. Michael Scott and L. Garnett (Britain) beat T. McKay and J. Ferrier, 7—5. L. McLean and T. Bourne (Britain) beat E. L. Apperly and M. Ryan, 6—5.
Scott and Garnett played faultless golf in the morning round to lead five up. Garnett’s length from the tees, supplemented by Scott’s excellent short game, made them an ideal combination. Whenever Garnett pushed his drives into the rough, Scott recovered brilliantly. Both putted well. The ninth hole (400 yards, par five) is a good indication of their play. Garnett drove about 270 yards, Scott’s approach finished eight feet from the pin, and Garnett sank the putt for an eagle. The pair were averaging fours when the match finished.
McLean was again in great form, but his partner, Bourn, was all astray, slicing badly. The British players were two down at lunch, due entirely to Bourn’s bad play. Apperly and Ryan were playing only a steady game. Bourn showed a reversal of form in the afternoon and, with McLean continuing to play good golf, the British pair took six of the first eight holes, eventually winning easily. The Australians after lunch played very badly. They were seldom on the fairway, and frequently took three putts.
