OBITUARY.

MRS E. G. CHILD

Following an illness of two months in a private hospital, after a period of indifferent health, the death occurred peacefully yesterday afternoon of Airs Alary Jane Henchcliffe Child, the wife of Air Edward George Child, of 225 Cook Street. Possessed of a most kindly disposition and generous nature ivhich expressed itself m very unselfish actions, Mrs Child will be sadly missed by many friends, not only in Palmerston North but in the surrounding districts.

Born in Jersey 83 years ago, Airs Child came to New Zealand Avith her sister (hoav Airs J. H. Simmons, of Ngata Street), in the barque Hudson, commanded by Captain Colville, on Alarch 14, 1878, the journey occupying exactly four months. They landed at Wellington, where Airs Child lived for ten years. She was married in 1885. Subsequently, Avitli her husband, avlio Avas engaged in the saAvmilling business, she resided at Halcombe, StanAva.y and Rangiotu for some years. They came to Palmerston North about 25 years ago, and had since resided at this centre. There Avas never a case of sickness close by Avhich did not receive the kindly ministrations of the late Airs Child Avhen she Avas Ih'ing in the country. Her Avilling services were always available to those in need, and she had crossed rivers at night on horseback on her errands of sympathy and kindness. This was one of the dominating traits in her character, and she carried it out right to the end.

Airs Child is survived by her husband, one daughter, Airs 11. A. Wagstaff, of Alonrad Street, Palmerston North, and three sons, Alessrs W. J., J. A. and E. W. Child, all of Palmerston North. There are six grand-chil-dren and tAvo great-grand-children. The deep sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to the bereaved family.

After a short service at the residence, the interment will take place at the Kelvin Grove cemetery to-morroAV afternoon.
