THE SPRING SHOW.

MANY EVENTS AND ATTRACTIONS

Indications are not lacking that the fast approaching Spring Show will eclipse previous records and set a new standard for this much anticipated event. The first essential factor in a-ny agricultural show is good competition in the competitive classes for live stock, _ for it is in this department that an agricultural show fulfils its primary duty, and function.. In almost every section this, year there is a marked increase in entries. Particularly is this noticeable in the sheep and. dairy cattle sections. The total entry in the sheep section is 594, the Romney Marsh breed being responsible for 150 entries, the Southdown breed 193, the Rycland breed 36, and the magnificent entry of 102 pons of ’fat lambs speaks very forcibly of the tremendous fat lamb business conducted in the Manawatu and neighbouring district. The interest in horse competitions is stronger this year than ever. Many of the leading horses in the. North Island will bo competing. An innovation . this year will be the competitions for judging of a Jersey cow, a pig ari'd a sheep by schoolboys. The domestic side of life is strongly represented in the magnificent entries received in the art and fancy needlework, cooking, preserves, etc.,, where the very pleasing total of 809 entries has been recorded. -The schools section reveals the splendid total of 2400 entries. The complete number of entries for the show is 4815 which is a record and is ahead of that for the Royal Show when hold at Palmerston North in 1932. Many innovations in the way of special attractions are bound to find favour with the visiting public. These innovations include tin hare racing, a sheep-shearing competition, and an evening entertainment consisting of a demonstration of fencing (foil and sabre) by pupils of the London School of Arms, Wellington. A monster Motor Car Olympia lias been arranged by the Manawatu . Motor Traders’ Association, details of which appear elsewhere in this issue. This will occupy practically the whole of one of the big halls. The whole of the association s commodious buildings will be occupied with show exhibits both competitive and those set up by the various retailing firms. The machinery and trade exhibits hall has filled very rapidly, indicating the confidence the traders have in the success of the coming Show. Luncheon and afternoon tea will be served in a very attractive setting in the entertainment hall. Few associations arc so fortunate in their ability to provide such comfortable and pleasing luncheon facilities. - Throughout the Show patrons will be kept in constant touch with the principal items of interest by means of the public address system (loud speaker) which has been installed in all the chief congregating areas. A running commentary on the oval events will enable all spectators to know just what is taking place, who the competitors are, and what event, is comsideshows will be more than usually attractive. The merry-go-round, ocean wave and miniature railway will provide die chief source of amusement for the children, while many new and up-to-date side-shows will appeal to the adult public. Brass bands will render musical programmes both during the day and at flight. Set off with a gay display of bunting on all Show buildings, the Showgrounds will provide a truly carnival setting for three days brimful of interest and entertainment.
