RESIGNATION OF MINISTER
OTTAWA, Oct. 27
The Minister of Trade and Commerce (Mr H. H. Stevens) to-day announced his resignation from the Canadian Cabinet following differences of opinion in Cabinet over Mr Stevens’s actions in connection with the mass buying and price spread investigation. Mr Stevens resignation has precipitated a Cabinet crisis which may lead to a dissolution and an election in the near future. Following a conference with the Governor-General after a secret Cabinet session, the Premier (Mr R. B. Bennett) refused to make a statement. Cabinet twice assembled and twice dispersed without a statement. Mr Mackenzie King, a former Premier, is touring Europe and Liberals expect he will return at once. Manitoba retail merchants telegraphed Mr Bennett urging that Mr Stevens's resignation be not accepted. They urge even further investigation into the departmental chain stores.
POWER SUPPLY PURCHASE
FINDINGS BY COMMISSION
TORONTO, Oct. 27,
A contention that the former Premier of Ontario, Mr George Henry, and Senator Arthur Meighen, who resigned his membership of the Ontario Hydro-electric Power Commission, because of personal interest, should have remained outside negotiations by the Ontario Government and the commission for the purchase of the Ontario Power Sendee Corporation assets, is contained in the findings of a Royal Commission which examined the purchases.
The report was released to-night by the Premier of Ontario, Mr Mitchell Hepburn.
