BISHOP OF NELSON
CANON HILLIARD CONSECRATED EAGER FOR HARMONIOUS WORKING.
Per Press Association. NELSON, Oct. 29. The consecration of Rev. William George Hilliard, M.A., as fifth Bishop of Nelson, followed by the service of enthronement in the evening, took place yesterday in the Nelson Cathedral, which was crowded. The Primate of New Zealand, Archbishop Averill, conducted the consecration service, assisted by Archbishop Mowll, of bj’uney, and Bishops West Watson, Clierrington, Williams, Bennett, Sprott, and Fitchett. The Bishop-elect was attended by his chaplain, Archdeacon Kimberley. The large number of Bishops present made the services most outstanding and at the enthronement in the evening both the Lessons were trpad by the Archbishops Dr Mowll, speaking at the consecration service, said another link had been forged in the chain which united the Church in New Zealand and Australia; the first link was Rev. Samuel Marsden. Australia and New Zealand represented all that the British Empire stood for and no effort was too great. The Dean of Nelson, Very Rev. P. B. Haggitt, conducted the enthronement service in the evening. The certificate of consecration was read by the Chancellor, Mr T. E. Maunsell. After the impressive ceremony the new Bishop said he expressed Ins warmest appreciation of all the consecrated friendliness which had gone to make the day such a memorable one and the services so solemn, so beautiful, and so inspiring. On behalf of the diocese he expressed deep gratitude to the Episcopate for being present. The Archbishop of Sydneys presence reminded them of the word Anzac, so rich in association m then Imperial and national life. Bishop Hilliard said lie was profoundly convinced that there was quite sufficient economic knowledge, scientific skill, find material good 101 this sorry world if all effort were consecrated to the common good and it all could get the Christ spirit into their daily life. . , He stood very definite in Ins views. He stood as an evangelical churchman, but lie did not see any conflict between conviction and brotherliness. God cud not make them all alike. “I am willing, anxious, and eager to work in a most brotherly and friendly way with men of whatever view in the great common task of building up the great Catholic Church of Christ, the new Bishop declared.
