The club championship was finalised, R. W. Cumberwortli annexing the title for 1934, with C. Bryan the runnerup. In the junior championship Beatson defeated W. Boon after a great struggle. D. H. Cook won the Goldfinch and Cousins Cup, while the Ekstedt Medallion was won by A. Berryman. Detailed results are :

THE FINALS

Although Cumberwortli won the final of the club championship by a decisive margin, the game was hardfought throughout. The winner was driving with the greater length, but Bryan produced the better short game. Cumberwortli early established a lead of 3 up, having taken the first three Holes in succession, but Bryan reduced the deficit at the short fourth by registering a birdie 2. The next two holes wei'e halved and Cumberwortli won the long one. Bryan retaliated by taking the eighth with an easy 3 to 4. At the ninth Cumberwortli was on in 2 and down in birdie 3. Bryan had played a nice approach over the willow but could not save the hole, being 3 down at thp turn. The tenth was halved in s’s and Cumberworth increased his lead at the next. Totaras was halved in par figures, but Cumberworth took the next in par 3 and Vista with a birdie 4, this giving him the match 5 and 4.

They completed the round, Cumberworth getting birdies at the 16th (490 yards) and 17th (168 yards), to complete in 78, his card reading:—Out, 55445 564 3—41. In: 564 34 5 4 2 4—37. Mr H. Bott umpired the match. JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP.

A keenly fought game in the junior championship saw the title won on the last green after a splendid tussle the whole way, Boon missing a great opportunity to annex the title. Beatson had hit a long ball with a slight hook at the 18th and it halted in front of the clubhouse. He chipped to within 10ft of the pin, but his putt for 3 lipped the hole. Boon, by steady golf, was left with an Bft putt for the half, but he failed and the title passed to his opponent. In the early stages fortunes swayed, Beatson winning the first hole, to which Boon replied by taking the next three, but at the eighth Beatson won in 3 to square the match. Boon secured the advantage at the 12tli and then added the 13tli, only for Beatson to again square matters. The next three were halved and Beatson clinched the position at the 18th to secure the title. Mr A. V. Pizzey was the umpire.

GOLDFINCH AND COUSINS CUP. On the outward journey in the Goldfinch and Cousins Cup final between D. H. Cook and L. A. Clausen, the finalists proved to be well matched, the match being square at the turn. However, on the inward half Clausen lost his touch on the green and Cook, who made few mistakes, finished with a comfortablo margin in his favour. At the first hole, Clausen’s second finished in a bunker and he took two more to get out. Cook was nicely on in 2 and he just failed to run down the putt for the birdie 3. At the next, Cook’s third was a bit strong and Clausen took the hole with scratch figures. The third and fourth were halved, but Clausen drove out of bounds at the fifth, this costing him the hole. He won Te Matai and at Tipperary it was Cook who pushed his drive out of bounds, Clausen winning the hole to take the lead. Cook was down in 3 to equalise matters at the eighth. The ninth was halved. Cook won the tenth with par figures, his second, from well out, being a

great shot, and the 11th was halved. Cook made victory assured by taking the next three holes and emerged the winner, 4 and 3. Mr J. A. Colquhoun was the referee. EKSTEDT MEDALLION. In the final of the Ekstedt Medallion competition, which is open to players with handicaps of 20 and over, A. Berryman defeated H. Dickel by 5 and 4. The winner established an early

lead and he maintained it to the close, Dickel suffering a lapse in his tee shots on occasion. Berryman, has been consistently good throughout the season and his win was fully merited. Mr G. Tremaine -was the referee. NATHAN CUP RETAINED.

The Palmerston North Club withstood the challenge for the Nathan Cup from Titalii Bay. A team of 10 players made the trip, but the honours rested with the home team under the captaincy of AV. H. Kerr, by 4 matches to two. The individual matches resulted:—H. Boon halved with W. H. Kerr; B. Gyles lost to A. W. Yortt; C. Gyles lost to C. Walsh; T. Hardcastle lost to R. Vannini; R.

Mexted halved with A. V. Pizzey; T. Johnston lost to H. Bennett; I. L. Gichard halved with C. Voss; J. Blanford beat J. Coupe; J. Watt halved with T. B. Arlidge; P. McMahon beat R. French. —Palmerston North, 4 wins; Titahi Bay, 2 wins; 4 matches halved.

ANGLO-AUSTRALIAN TEST. SINGLES MATCHES SHARED. SYDNEY, Oct. 27. The first golf Test match ever played between Great Britain and Australia commenced at the Australian Club’s course at Kensington to-day with four singles matches over 36 holes. Results are: L. McLean (Britain) beat J. Feirier (Australia), 5 and 4. L. Garnett (Britain) beat E. L. Apperly (Australia), 5 and 4. T. McKay (Australia) beat Hon. Michael Scott (Britain), 2 and 1. ♦ M. Ryan (Australia) beat T. Bourn (Britain), 1 up.

McLean played very steadily in the morning round to lead 2 up. He was only three times off the fairway, approached accurately, and had a stroke round of 72, par being 71. Ferrier, on the other hand, was erratic. McLean was never off the line in the afternoon, winning easily. Garnett outdrove Apperly, but was less accurate with his irons. He led 1 up at lunch. Garnett played brilliantly in the afternoon, however, averaging 4’s when the match finished. Scott and McKay’s contest was marked by very bad golf. Both were frequently in bunkers and putted weakly. Bourne and Ryan had a great struggle. Bourne had a tendency to push out his shots, but recovered well. Bourne looked like giving Britain a 3 to 1 lead when Ryan holed out from a swamp to square the match at the thirty-third and eventually to win after Bourne’s drive at the last hole finished awkwardly behind a tree. Foursomes matches will be played on Monday.
