WON BY NIGHTLY.
COX STAKES TO CHATHAM. MELBOURNE, Oct, 28. At the Moonee Valley races the following was tho result of the MOONEE VALLEY GOLD CUP, of £3OOO (including £2OO Gold Cup). One mile four furlongs and a half. NIGHTLY, 9.2 1 MIRAMOND, 8.2 2 UPOKO ARIKI, 7.8 3 MeCarten rode the winner. Nightly was not extended, and his effort is rogarcled as a great Melbourne Cup trial. 1-Ie is now liable to a rehandicap. The New Zealander Peter Jackson won the Moonee Valle> Cup last year. To-day s minor place-getters all have New Zealand associations. , Streperus dropped dead shortly atter tne finish of the race. The W.S. Cox Plate resulted: CHATHAM I HALL MARK f ROGILLA 5
Playground, when running second, fell at the last jump in the hurdle race. His rider, I. Tucker, escaped injury. As was the case at Randwick, Roy Reed successfully claimed a losing fee on Nightly, The trainers of the New Zealanders Walton Park and Ventrac were fined £1 for not scratching their horses m the cup. Silver Ring was outclassed in the Cox Plate He is better suited in a handicap. Golden Hair and Royal Hunting failed to show up in the Dundonald Handicap.
The winner of that race, Double Bard, has had four wins in his last five starts. NIGHTLY REHANDICAPPED FOR MELBOURNE CUP. Nightly has been rehandieapped as the result of winning the Moonee Valley Cup and will now carry 9.4 instead of 9.0 in the Melbourne Cup.
