EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD ” OCTOBER 27, 1904. Seven inches of rain bad already fallen in Palmerston North during the month. This was estimated at 708 tons, or 158,812 gallons per acre. During a discussion by the Borough Council the opinion was expressed that the cost of the Opera House, when the building was finished, would be nearer £IO,OOO than £6OOO.
Burglars had broken into the office of the Magistrate’s Court, but no plunder was secured. They paid a visit to cupboards in the solicitors’ room, but found nothing more entertaining than wigs or gowns. Britain v-as stated to be on the brink of war with Russia following the action of the Russian Baltic fleet, when proceeding east, in firing on trawlers from Hull. The Czar was stated to have made a frail apology. The British Home fleet had left Cromarty suddenly under sealed orders and the Mediterranean fleet had left Venice. The Russian aqtion was characterised as an inexcusable blunder, either the result of murderous intention, or wicked negligence. Found guilty of accepting a bribe of £12,000 leading to the loss of a transport, a Japanese Admiral had been beaten to death by his comrades. An endless line lof Russian wounded was stated to be 1 crawling along the roads leading to Mukden.
