YOUTHFUL HEIRESS.
DISPUTE OVER CUSTODY. NEW YORK, Oct. 25. A sudden and dramatic climax occurred to-day in a feud between, two of the most socially prominent American families, when the 10-year-old Gloria Vanderbilt, heiress to a 3,000,000 dollar fortune, brought a chambers action in the Supreme Court, before Mr Justice Carew, to decide whether she should remain in the custody of her -paternal aunt, Mrs Harry Payne Whitney, or of her own mother, Mrs Gloria Vanderbilt.
The Judge declined to reveal the child’s preference, although it was learned that prior to deciding she recited the Lord’s Prayer and “Hail, Mary.” Mrs Vanderbilt brought a suit recently to recover the child from Mrs Whitney, who refuses to yield on the grounds that plaintiff devotes too much time to social obligations, drinks excessively, and is otherwise unfit to be the child’s mother. Later it was learned that the child chose the aunt, with whom she has teen living for the last two years. Previously the Judge indicated that the child’s preference would carry great weight.
