WELLINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE.

YESTERDAY’S BUSINESS AND PRICES. Business was brisk on tho Wellington Stock Exchange yesterday a substantial turnover being recorded. Firm conditions ruled in most, sections of tho market, with an active and well-spread demand. Government loans continued in keen demand and quotations were well maintained. Business was done in 4 per cent, stocks, 1949, at £lO9 10s and in 4 per cent;: stocks, 1955, at £ll3 10s. Local body and company debentures wore quiet and steady. Added strength in New Zealand was a feature in bank shares. Buyers were in at 495, sellers asking 6d higher. Union of Australia wore easier at £9 ss. Commercial of Australia sold at 16s and further sales of National of New Zealand wero reported at 70s. Goldsbrough Mort were reported sold at 31s Id. New Zealand Loan and Mercantile, ordinary stock, moved up 40s to £45, but sellers were asking £54. Auckland Gas were firmer on sales reported at 263 lOd and 25s lid. Buyers of Wellington Gas moved up to 41s 3d without attracting sellers. There was an active demand for insurance shares, New Zealand again selling at 695. National were wanted at 21s 3d, Standard at 69s 6cl, and Queensland at ■ 71s. Meat and shipping shares also attracted good attention. Wellington Woollen made a further advance, buyers quoting £5 11s 6d for ordinaries and £5 12s for preference. Kaitangata Ccal sold at 21s 6d. Now Zealand Breweries were easy at 48s lOd, sellers 49s 6d, but Tooths firmed to 50s 3d, sellers 525, and Tui to 56s 6d, no sellers. A sale of Colonial Sugar made lato on Wednesday was reported at £74 ss, but the announcement of tho coming dividend and share distribution sent buyers up to £79, sellers asking £BO 10s. Wilsons Cement were very firm at 345, sellers 34s 6d. Woolworths (N.Z.) ordinaries rose to £8 without drawing sellers. Australian Glass wore very firm at _s2s 6d, sellers Is higher. There was an improved demand for mining shares. Two parcels of Blackwater were traded at 33s and buyers stayed in at 32s 9d. Waihi moved strongly to 38s 3d, sellers 39s 3d. YESTERDAY’S QUOTATIONS.
