EXCESS OF IMPORTS. COMPARATIVE RETURNS. WELLINGTON, Oct. 25. There was an excess of imports over exports last month of £96,000 in New Zealand currency, this result being shown for the third month in succession. During the quarter ended September 30, tho excess of imports over exports totalled £N ,Z.2oO,uuu. The overseas trade returns for September, released yesterday by the Customs Department, show that exports at £2,447,032 in New Zealand currency were £274,010 higher than those for September, 1933. In tno official statistics, exports of merchandise are expressed in terms of New Zealand currency; imports from Australia are recorded in terms of Australian currency and imports from other countries in sterling. The recorded value of imports last month was £2,096,950, compared with £2,0G2,219 for September, 1933, an increase of £34,731. Expressed in New Zealand currency, tiie value of imports last month was £2,543,000, an crease of £IB,OOO on that for September, 1933. Imports for July were valued at £N.Z.2,867,000, and for August at £N.Z.3,219,000. The export and import figures for September for the last three years conipare as follow :

The value of imports last month exceeded that of exports by £N.Z.96,000, compared with an excess of imports of £N.Z.352,000 for September, 1933, and £N.Z.803,000 for September, 1932 NINE MONTHS’ COMPARISON. Largo increases in both exports and imports are shown in the figures for the nine months ended September 30, compared with those for the corresponding periods of 1933 and 1932, as is shown in the following table: —

Exports at £N.Z.39,876,921 show an increase of £N.Z.8,334,100, compared with those for the nine months of last year. Imports for the nine months are valued at £N.Z.22,386,000, an increase of £N.Z.3,394,000, compared with those for the corresponding period of last year. The excess of exports over imports for the last nine months was £N.Z.17,491,000, compared with £N.Z.12,551,000 for the corresponding period of last year and £N.Z.9,092,000 for the nine months of 1932.
