BOXING ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL MEETING. Per Press Association. HASTINGS, Sept. 20. The annual conference of the New Zealand Boxing Association was opened in Hastings this morning, Mr D. H. Newbigin (president) presiding. The conference was opened by the Mayor (Mr Maddison), who wished the sport of boxing a successful future. Mr Newbigin, referring to the sending of a team to Australia last season, said the tour had done more good than appeared on paper. In regard to the Bert Lowe benefit, he said great credit was due to Greymouth and Taumarunui for their contributions. Mr W. Talbot (Wellington) criticised the making of grants to associations short of cheir quota of fees. He expressed doubt whether, in view of the fact that each association had only one representative in 20 years, and that the total cost in that time was £2500, international contests were worth holding. Mr George Bush (Auckland) answered that no commitment for future tours had been made. The position was still open. Mr Bush added that the availability of the trip to Australia as a prize for merit had no doubt stimulated boxing. The following is a summary of the remits carried :—-■ That, in rule 19, clause E be deleted; that support be given to all sporting bodies in an attempt to bring about a reduction in, or the abolition of, the amusement tax on sporting fixtures; that nominations of boxers for national contests shall not be accepted from an association other than that by which the boxer is registered, unless with the consent of the association concerned; that the ban prohibiting the appearance of coloured boxers in professional contests shall be romoved, provided permission for the appearance of the boxer concerned shall be obtained from the Boxing Council. It was resolved to delete rule 23a, page 12. It was agreed that arrangements be made with t/ie New Zealand Boxing Council to forward to associations a monthly bulletin giving particulars of all future boxing contests arranged and held under its jurisdiction, together with the names and weights of professional contestants, the value of the purse or the percentage basis, and date, name and place of tourney. Also that all associations, make every endeavour to co-operate with the council in supplying this information and arrange with the boxing professionals in their respective districts to lodge with the council from time to time their application for any engagements required, such application to include a record of the weight, expenses, and purse required as well as availability, this information to be also embodied in the monthly bulletin. It was decided to add to rule 37 a new clause (d), that any boxer who holds three professional titles and who retires undefeated shall be presented with a certificate in recognition thereof, Artie Hay to receive the first certificate. It was also decided that the New Zealand Boxing Council arrange for the importation of overseas boxers to New Zealand and that the boxers while in the Dominion shall be under the control of the council, who shall arrange suitable matches in various cGntrcs. It was resolved by 63 votes to 55 to hold the next championships at Dunedin. The only other application taken was Christchurch, owing to the absence of the sponsors of Greymouth and Timaru. . The election of officers resulted: — President, Mr W. D. Wilson (Otago); vice-presidents, Messrs D. H. Newbigin (Hawke’s Bay) and A. H. .Ourtayn© (Wellington); appeal coninxittee, trustees and council, also all individual officers were re-elected. The treasurer (Mr Dawson) estimated the income at £IBOO and expenditure at £1213. For the current year from July to September the income was £ll6 above last year’s estimates, he said. . On Mr Talbot’s motion it was resolved that there will be no commitment entered, into with regard to an intemational contest with Australia in 1936 without the consent of the 1935 conference.
