SPECIAL SESSION?
PARLIAMENT IMAY MEET IN FEBRUARY.
WELLINGTON, Sept. 20.. A special session of Parliament in February is under consideration in Ministerial circles. A definite decision is unlikely until the present session is further advanced. Any such decision will partly depend. on the nature of the recommendations made by the Dairy Industry Commission. These in skeleton form are already in the hands of the Cabinet, with which the . members of the Commission have since conferred. There is a possibility that the Government will legislate on this subject in instalments, by introducing a Bill this session giving effect to the more urgent aspects of the problem of helping the industry, and that Parliament will be asked to meet for a few weeks early next year to complete tlie task. It is gathered that the measures to be taken to rehabilitate the dairy industry are regarded by the Government as being interlocked with the proposal outlined in the Budget for the establishment of a National Mortgage Corporation. It seems possible that the Government will deem it advisable to pass legislation dealing with that question before Parliament meets again in the normal way next June. The proposal was merely sketched in the Budget; but it is understood that departmental officers are now busily engaged on the task of assembling, the practical details of the scheme. The Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) has expressed a fear that the present session will extend until December; but with reasonable application to its work there is no reason wli.v the session should not end by the middle of November, particularly if it is ultimately decided to call the House together again for a brief session in February. Meanwhile, the necessity for a February session will not be determined until the legislation rising from the Dairy Commission’s report has been drafted. A start on the preparation of the Bill has already been made in the light of the private report already submitted to the Government by the Commission. —Christchurch Press correspondent.
