BOXING

AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS

SECOND NIGHT’S RESULTS

Per Press Association

HASTINGS, Sept. 20. The standard of boxing at the second night of the New Zealand amateur championships was greatly improved and provided a fine programme, with many exciting and clever exhibitions. In the majority of divisions the finals were reached, but in two classes the semi-finals will take place to-morrow night, when the tournament concludes. The Hawke’s Bay boys, Boyle and McKay, gave a great showing in the semi-final of the flyweight, the former winning, and will meet Larsen in the final. Robinson (Marlborough) and Cadwallader (Wairarapa) each won a semi-final by a narrow margin, the former being more impressive. Cadwallader and Kelly (Auckland) indulged in a lively bout, the issue being decided in the hnal round when Cadwallader let himself go. The featherweights provided some of the best boxing of the evening, Gordon (Taranaki) beating Fisher (Christchurch) and Smith (Auckland) by a very narrow margin after giving clever exhibitions. Hawes (Greymouth) was beaten by a local slogger, who is likely to enter the final with Gordon. Borcovsky lost the second fight to Jarvis (Taranaki) after giving a good showing. In the lightweight division two hardhitting welters, Parris (Wellington) and Jack (Southland) emerged victors, and will enter the semi-finals. Contrary to anticipations, the middleweights were evenly matched, Howson (Greymouth) scoring a. narrow win over O’Connell (Oamaru) in one semifinal and Martin winning the other after a strenuous fight with Davis (Wairarapa). A series of defaults in the two top divisions leaves Soane (Motueka), Bourne (Christchurch) and Pascoe (Southland) to fight out both the light-heavy and heavyweight classes..
