WEST END CLUB. “In pursuance of a recommendation from the last annual meeting, the club affiliated with the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association and throughout the season the club enjoyed the privilege of participating in the association’s Wednesday and Saturday competitions,” says the annual report of the West End Tennis Club. “In reviewing the standard of play in the club and comparing the standard exhibited by members at the close of the past season with that of the previous season, a great improvement has been shown. There is no doubt that this was due to the members playing in the association’s matches, and the committee feel justified and rewarded in affiliating. The courts were in splendid order, despite the heavy wear and tear of the many inter-club matches. All the visiting clubs spoke very highly of their condition. At the conclusion of the season all the courts were top-dressed and have since done well. They should be in excellent condition for the coming season. The thanks of the club for the excellent order of the courts are due to the honorary groundsman (Mr G. Schlierike), and the committee has mode due record of his services. “The club participated in ten enterclub matches in the association’s competitions and all were thoroughly enjoyed,” continues the report. The result of these matches was five wins and five losses, quite a fair record for so young a club. Friendly matches were also played with the Linton Club and the Mayfair Club, and these were also very enjoyable. The club championship was competed for on a handicap basis and some good games resulted. The winners proved to be: Ladies, Mrs Travers, men, Mr M. Smith. Both are scratch players. The membership was a little less than in the previous year, but quite satisfactory with regard to the stringent times. 'The finances are in. a very healthy state. The annual dance was a financial success and the thanks of the club are due to-the organisers. There appears every likelihood of a hard court being available for the use of the club for the forthcoming season. This will fill a long felt want, and, more particularly, provide the space necessary for a volley board. Prospects certainly look very bright for the coming season. In conclusion, the committee wish to thank Miss Owtram, Mr B. H. Just and Mr A. Just for donation of plants for the flower beds (which were very picturesque throughout the season), the West End School Committee for their many considerations and cooperation, and the Press for the usual faithful reports of meetings and games.”
