OPIKI

(From Our Own Correspondent.) OPIKI, Aug. 3. The general committee of the Opiki Women’s institute met in the school on Wednesday. Mrs V. Claridge presided over 'a good attendance. Members present were Alesdamcs Coojier, Pcrrett, Larsen, Webb and Irwin, Misses Seifert, Cooksley and Ellery. The secretary was instructed to write a letter of sympathy to Mrs Wilde extending best wishes tor a speedy recovery. Members were reminded to bring peggy squares and a parcel to the value of sixpence, in addition to sixpence for the exchange stall, at the next meeting to be held on August 18. The September competition will be for the best pair of hand-made leather gloves. Great interest is being displayed towards Mr Fothcringhmn’s talks of travel in Central Africa, tome fifty people assembling in the school on' Wednesday evening to hear hint. These addresses, besides being extremely entertaining owing mainly to the style of the speaker, are of great educational value and anyone attending can be assured of a couple of hours’ delightful break in the monotony of present day existence. Mr Folheringham, on this occasion, after giving a brief resume of his previous talks, took his audience off the beaten tracks of civilisation, as it exists in those parts, into the very heart of the jungle ol Nyasaland. He dealt chiefly with the mentality of the natives and their mode of life. During the greater part of I)is address the sjieaker caused his. hearers to literally live in a land of spirits and quaint superstition. Mr Fotheiham was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Another talk will be given next month, when Northern Rhodesia will be the subject of interest.

On Wednesday a seven-aside football tournament was held at Tokomaru between the Tokomaru, Opiki, Linton and Makerua schools. Opiki lost to Linton and Makerua and drew with Tokomaru.
