HARD LABOUR SENTENCE.
FOR NEGLIGENT DRIVING. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 6. Cecil John Steer was sentenced to six months’ hard labour to-day by the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, accused having been found guilty on Thursday of negligently driving and causing bodily injury to George Kermode near Tawa Flat on January 13. Sir Michael Myers did not cancel the driving license. Pie said he would assume that the negligence and drinking were isolated. He did not doubt that Steer was an exceptionally efficient driver. The accident had happened in broad daylight on a clear road. There was evidence of liquor having been consumed, there was failure to stop, and there was some suggestion of interference with witnesses.
After counsel had addressed the Court, Sir Michael Alyers said he would consider the interference of accused with witnesses as not having beeii proved, although the matter was suspicious.
