IMMIGRATION RESTRICTION.
EFFECT OF GOVERNMENT'S POLICY.
DEPARTMENT’S ANNUAL REPORT WELLINGTON, Aug. 1. The effect of the Government’s immigration restriction policy is set out in the annual report of the Immigration Department, which was tabled in the House_ of Representatives. For instance, in the year ended March 31, 1927, 11,239 assisted immigrants and 3704 full-fare immigrants arrived. These figures were reduced to 3822 and 2375 in the following year, when the restrictions were first applied, and there were successive reductions until the respective totals of 56 and 570 were reached in 1933. An even more substantial curtailment occurred in the year ended March 31, 1934, when the only assisted immigrants were a woman and three children nominated by tlie husband in the previous year. The nomination was approved as a special case. The number of full-fare immigrants was 464. The report says there are signs of a distinct revival of interest in Empire migration, both in the United Kingdom and in the Dominions, and this interest is likely to be intensified in the near future. Owing in some respects to the fact that the Empire Settlement Act, 1922, expires in 1937 many schemes have been suggested, but so far as New Zealand is concerned it would appear that none that has come under notice is as suitable as the nomination system, which had been so successfully adopted during the past years, and particularly since the passing of the Empire Settlement Act..
