UNEMPLOYMENT TAX.

When replies to questions were being discussed in the House on Thursday, Mr J. A. Nash said he wished to refer to tho question he had asked with reference to the removal of the unemployment tax in cases where a local authority made a small grant, and in the eases of foremen who received an additional small amount on their unemployment wages. In some cases the foremen on relief works received about 8s a week additional for tho responsibility they undertook, lie said, and in one or two cases the local authority made an allowance of Id per hour to tho men, but, unfortunately, under the law both the foremen and the men were called upon to pay the 5 per cent, unemployment tax on the additional amount they received, with the result that many of the men declined to accept the extra responsibility. It was quite wrong to call on those men to pay the tax, and, while the Minister stated that consideration would be given to the matter when amendments to the law were under review, the House should be informed when such amendments would come up for consideration.
