MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

CHARGES OF THEFT,

Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., presided at to-day’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court. Henry Hedley Briant Maunder, a plasterer, aged 20, of Ashhurst, faced three charges, as follow: (1) That, on July 28, at Palmerston North, being a person released on probationary license, ho did fail to observe the terms and conditions of his release; (2) that, on or about June 6, at Palmerston North, he did steal a pair of gloves and a bunch of keys of a total value of 7s, the property of Owen Jones; (3) that, on or about July 4, at Palmerston North, he did steal three billiard balls and one pair of gloves of a total value of £3 os, the property of John Vickerstaff. Accused pleaded guilty to all three charges. Detective Barling said accused had been released on April 12 from tlireo years’ Borstal treatment for theft, assault and converting a motor cycle to his own use. The only work he had done since his release was from May 2 to May 11 as a bricklayer’s assistant. Since then he had been frequenting billiard saloons and dances and had been associating with convicted thieves. He had assisted the police to recover tho billiard balls, but the gloves had been destroyed. The keys had been found in his possession. Harry Cole, probation officer, gave evidence that accused reported to him quite correctly until the last occasion was due. There had been a lot of complaints about him and his foster parents had tried their best to get him to work, but he had gone his own way. “You do not seem to have taken advantage of the chances given you,” said the Magistrate in sentencing accused to four months’ imprisonment. The sentences were one month on each of the first two charges (the terms to be concurrent) and three months on the third charge.
