Y.M.C.A.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEET. The monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the. Y.M.C.-A. was held on Friday night, when there were present Messrs J. A. Grant (chairman), R. C. Donald, R. Linldater, A. Clark, E. W. Child, W. H. Brown and the general secretary. The general secretary reported that the annual observance of ■ Mothers’ Day had been held during the month, when there was a record attendance of ‘members and friends. He stated that the association (was greatly indebted to Rev. 1). J. Davies for the fitting address he delivered; and the singing under Rev. C. S; Matthews was excellent. The balance of the collection after expenses had been paid was handed to the Mayor’s Relief Fund. “Rev. H. L. Richards spoke to the leaders’ corps on the first Monday of the month, when the leaders held their initial service. These will he held once a month, when one of the ministers in the city will deliver a special address of a definite spiritual nature. This service is apart from the usual devotional period held by the leaders’ corps, and the leaders are showing a great interest in this added influence.” It was reported that the Debating Chib, under the chairmanship of Kir KI. Williamson, had every prospect of a most successful season. “There is quite a lot of new material in the club this year in the form of younger members, and in the two debates held to date these young members have shown themselves to advantage. The regular meetings of the Optimist Club are being well attended, each luncheon being marked by a spirit of goodfellowship and enthusiasm; 12 new members have joined the club this season, and the membership, which now stands at 51, is the largest since the club’s, inauguration. One of tire most successful social functions yet held by the social committee took place last Wednesday evening on the occasion of the usual periodical social and dance. Keen interest is still being shown by players and public alike in the inter-house-basketball.” The hoys’ work director reported that the aggregate attendance in the Hoys’ department for the month was 402. The attendance in the classes had suffered on account of the school holidays and the visit of several boys to the Wellington Association. All classes were working well under the group system. A party of 24 boys] were taken to Wellington during the) holidays to compete against the Wel-j lington Association in an all-round j competition. Palmerston won the, soccer and the athletics, while Wellington won the Rugby, basketball, and dodge ball, thus proving winners by 11 points to 9. A motor tour was arranged for file bovs and a church parade was held. The boys were made very welcome wherever they were taken, and especially is tlie'hospitality of the Wellington Association to be commended. The soccer club entered three teams in the competition at the beginning of the season, but owing to the paucity of older players the fourth grade team has been withdrawn. The library has been overhauled, and there is now a good selection of hooks free to all members.
