COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING. WOODVILLE, May 24. The annual meeting of the Woodville County Council was hold yesterday, Mr M. O. Grainger presiding. Others present wore Crs R. iMaboy, G. Peebles, 1. H. Williams, R. 11. Morgan, J. Galloway, O. IT. Druce and 11. Shcfiiold. 'J he chairman was unanimously re-elected for a further term on the motion of Or Morgan and Cr Druce. Tributes were paid to his work, and Mr Grainger expressed his appreciation of the services of the council and staff. . . , The chairman’s honorarium was fixed the same as last year, also the amount allowed for tho travelling expenses of councillors. No alteration was made in tho personnel of tho finance committee. Tho financial statement submitted disclosed that the total receipts from all sources were £13,524 10s 7d. The total expenditure was £15,027 3s lOd. Outstanding rates and rents at March 31, 1934, amounted to £6OB 14s 7d as against' £744 18s 6d at March 31, 1933. On March 31', 1933, tho ridings showed a total credit of £4166 15s 2d, and at March 31, 1934, a total credit of £3937 13s Id. “Councillors have exercised care and economy in administering their ridings,” slated tho chairman in the report, “for it is apparent from tho figures that tho council has adopted an even higher standard of maintenance as foreshadowed in last year’s report. The policy of widening tho roads, etc., is being steadily tarried out where practicable. “Tho total cost of maintenance ot tho teams during tho year amounted to £622 16s 4d, wages being £349 2s, shooing and repairs £B3 16s 4d, and oats, chaff, grazing, etc., £lB9 18s; 8500 yards of metal wero carted; other works, such as widening, carting, etc., were also carried out. Tho cost per yard of metal, including tho pitman’s wages, was 2s 2d per yard, as. against 2s 8d last year. The cost of keep per horse per day amounted to 2s Id, as against 2s 3d last year. “Now concrete bridges have been erected on Saddle and Jackson’s Roads. Tho policy of replacing old wooden culverts in concrete is being .steadily carried out. During the year, 150 chains of two-coat penetration sealing were carried out, in addition to ordinary maintenance. Sealing during this year is estimated to cost £1666, this item,/ of course, being subject to tho amount of money allocated by tile Main Highways Board. “On March 31, 1933, the county fund account showed a credit of £4244 6s 2d, due, as was explained at the time, to outstanding highways moneys being paid in. On March 31, 1934, the county fund account showed a 'credit of £3741, whieli is satisfactory as the general rate was reduced from 1 l-16d to Id last year. I would recommend that the general rate for the forthcoming year be Id.”
'The report was adopted, together with estimates providing for an expenditure of £17,045 10s 6d this year.
