SUSTENANCE SCHEME.

OPINION IN LEVIN. The Levin Borough Council this week received from the Mayor of Palmerston North (Mr A. E. Mansford) a letter asking them to support the protest from his city against the sustenance scheme. “While wishing the Mayor of Palmerston success in his efforts for the unemployed this council is alive to the fact that the men in the cities are better treated than those in the country,” said the Mayor of Levin. It was decided to reply on these lines. “For some time we have been agitating for tree planting along the coast by the unemployed,” said Cr. Roe, “and as the Native Minister and Minister of Lands will be visiting Levin shortly he thought the council should approach them in this matter. “There were thousands of acres of good land covered by sand.” Mr A. E. Mansford, Mayor of Palmerston North, wrote to the annual meeting of the Moodville County Council. yesterday, asking for the council’s consideration of tlie present system of administering the unemployment funds in Palmerston North with a view to a protest against recent arrangements in regard to the payments under the sustenance system. —The letter was received.
