Black, J.P’s., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day on a charge of the theft, on February 3 at Feilding, of an overcoat valued at £2 10s, the property of Edward Cockroft. John Jamieson Fraser appeared on a charge of wilfully damaging a cell utensil valued at 10s, the property of the Government. Senior - Sergeant Whitehouse said that accused had bashed the utensil against the cell door until it was useless. He suggested that a prohibition order to taken out. Accused said he thought he would refuse a prohibition order. He only came into town three or four times a year, and had no place but the hotels to go to for board. The Bench: Have we the power to enforce a prohibition order ? Senior-Sergeant Whitehouse: I think you have. Accused, who had demurred, then consented to take out an. order. The Bench informed him that he would be allowed a week in which to pay for the utensil, Mr Black commenting that at 10s it must be an aristocratic one.

The Senior-Sergeant: We do not know where he will be in a week. It will only mean getting a warrant. Accused said he would send the money and pay it into Court, default being fixed by the Bench at 48 hours’ imprisonment.
