RIOTOUS WINS STEEPLECHASE. HURDLES TO EASTERLY. The Wanganui Jockoy Club’s winter meeting was concluded on Saturday afternoon. The two jumping laces, the Wanganui Steeplechase and the May Hurdles, provided good and spectacular contests. Riotous won fairly comfortably the cross-coun-try event,, but in the hurdles Easterly got home only by a head. There was some vory keen racing on tho flat, Copper King taking tho principal handicap and Tho Tiger tho sprint. Tho Tiger was a fresh horse, and won nicely. Thu totalisator, which oporated on the old system, handled £12,901 10s for the day for eight races, ns against, £9838 10s on the second day last, year with seven races, an increase of £3063. Pladie then rushed up into third place alongside Mcatoa, others handy being Lady Ronald, Bon Rapide and Boon. Land Tax led into the straight and hung on well, but Gay Seton wore her down to win decisively. Lady Ronald was a close third. Time, i. 14 2-5. Easterly ran past the front bunch at the half-mile, and jumped clear into the load at tho fence on tho turn from High Grader, Count Lcndroff, Million, Jayson, and Invictus. Easterly and High Grader skipped over the last hurdle together, the two inside panels having been practically levelled in the first round. Once over Easterly drew out, but High Grader came again, and only failed by a bead. They wore five or six lengths ahead of the others, with Jayson third, and Invictus fourth. Time, 2.56 3-5. The first division of the Champion Hack Plate was won by tho comparative outsider Matorni, but while he was always handy and going well, ho was lucky to beat Diagano. Arena mado the pace when the field had settled down from Matorni; then came Diagano, in behind on the rails, followed by Trcs Sec. All Spirit, and Windward. The field closed up on the turn,- and hemmed in both Dia gano and All Spiel,, while West Tor was also barred an opening. Matorni drew dear in 'lie Miaiglit, ear. Don Erma made the pace in an endeavour to win all the way from Brown Abbey, Riotous, Manuiri, Tunbridge, Copey and Makeup. Brown Abbey took on Don Erma over the the last circuit and finally passed him on the home turn, but then Riotous, who bad been lying in behind all the while, moved up on Brown Abbey. Riotous got the inside position to tho last fence and ran on for a comfortable win, with Manuiri cutting out Brown Abbey for second. Don Erma was a moderate fouth, and Makeup next. Time, 4.55 2-5. Boudoir and Wcrohia moved up on the homo turn and Wcrohia looked likely entering tho straight., but could not go on with it. Red Rufus then moved forward and ran on to win well from Boudoir, with Gay Court, who was actually the first into the straight, weakening into a good third. The Tiger drew No. 1 position and won after a display of exceptional brilliance. Ho and Royal Hunting began host, the only one failing to got away on terms being Souchong, who moved hack just as tho jjarrier rose. The Tiger soon ran into the lead by himself from Royal Hunting, Good Hunting, Princess Doreen, Lack, and Speed, with View Halloo drifting to the rear. Tho Tiger was howling along merrily in front round the turn and into tho straight, while all his opponents were being hard ridden. They began to closo up rapidly on him at the finish, hut he had an unassailable advanlago, and won by just short of a length from a hunch, which had a desperate finish for second placo. Good Hunting, Royal Hunting, View Halloo, and Princess Doreen being separated by heads only. Lack and Speed were next. Time, 1.14.
