DEATH OF ACTRESS.
FORMER LONDON FAVOURITE. LONDON, April 18. The death has occurred of the actress, Miss Connie Ediss. Connie Ediss was a London favourite for many years, and her performances in New Zealand under J. C. Williamson, Ltd.’s management, in “Canary Cottage” and “So Long Letty,” in 1916, are still well remembered. Miss Ediss was horn in Brighton, England, in 1871, and made her first appearance on the stage in 1883 under the name of Connie Coutts. After making her name as an hilarious comedienne in London music halls, she succeeded Lillie Belmore at the Gaiety in musical comedy in “The Shop Girl.” Her success was never in doubt. Later Miss Ediss appeared in “My Girl,” “The Circus Girl,” “The Runaway Girl,” “The Toreador,” “The Spring Chicken,” and later still in “The Arcadians,” “The Girl on the Farm,” “The Sunshine Girl” and other musical comedies. In her later years she appeared in comedy (without music) and was just as entertaining as ever. It has been said that the late King Edward VII, when Prince of Wales, was always greatly entertained by the drollery, of Miss Ediss, and that on one occasion she actually indulged in a “wise-crack” at his expense, when he was occupying the Royal Box.
