EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD,” APRIL 20, 1904. It had been computed that hemp cost £24 a ton to produce, whereas it was worth £23 on the market. In former years it was produced for £lO a ton. It had been suggested by a person doing a considerable aniont of timber-carting that a tramway bo iaid along tbe road to Fitzherbert instead of carting the timber on the road. The Kairanga County Council, tho governing body, submitted the matter to a sub-committee for a report. Some 26 eases of frozen eels formed an item of tho cargo of a Homo boat sailing from Napier. .' The dairying industry in the Auckland province had developed steadily, the, number of boxes of butter exported being:— 1899, 17,000; 1900, 27,000; 1901, 38,000; 1902, 49,000; 1903, 71,000; 1904, 102,000.
