PUNISHED TWICE.
COURT’S WARNING. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April 19. Strong criticism of the attitude of the Unemployment Board in attempting to obtain from persons who have been punished by the Court full restitution of the money they, obtained from the Ixiard by means of false pretences, whether the Court directed that such restitution be made or not, was expressed by Mr H. P. La wry, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court. Mr Lawry said that where an offender was fined and no order for the restitution was made the action of the board amounted to punishing the offender twice. He gave an intimation tlxat if tlie attitude was persisted in lie would in fairness to offenders merely convict and discharge them for obtaining money by means of false pretences. The matter was raised by the probation officer, who said that an unsatisfactory position had arisen regardink men placed on probation. The authorities in Wellington had taken up an extraordinary attitude, in demanding full restitution, and it seemed to him that it amounted to the powers of the Court being overridden. The Magistrate: They are inflicting a greater penalty than I have imposed in this Court.
