BRITISH FIGURES NEARLY DOUBLE, BEST RETURNS SINCE 1930. ACTIVITIES OF FOREIGN YARDS. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.-—Copyright.) Received April 18, 11.45 a.m. LONDON, April 17. Shipping under construction in Britain and Ireland at the end of March totalled 481,440 tons—nearly double the tonnage at the corresponding date last year—according to Lloyd’s quarterly returns. The tonnage under construction in the rest of the world w-as 597,731. This constitutes the first quarterly increase Of any consequence since Jun», 1930. The tonnage under construction in the leading foreign countries was as follows: — Japan 122,590 France 103,188 Germany 82,650 Holland ... 51,315 Denmark 51,140 Italy 47,670 Sweden 47,340 Spain 34,480 United States 27,334 The world tonnage of motor ships is 588,589 and of oil tankers 248,578.
