RESTORING 10 PER CENT CUTS OR 10 PER CENT MORE EMPLOYMENT?

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Our Labour leaders seemingly are more concerned with restoration of the 10 per cent cut than ending relief employment, and in view of the consideration of the proposal by the City Council and other bodies, I consider that in Government Departments, City Council, and other noncompetitive concerns, it would be preferable to rehabilitate 10 per cent more men into employment by reducing the hours of present employees to 40 per week. It is obvious that a 40 hour week cannot hope to work out in competitive trades and callings and can only be successful in State and local body undertakings.

Further, it seems necessary to accept the view that all labouring work performed by State and local bodies should be permanently on a 40 hour basis at nominal rates in lieu of a continuation of “relief” which is getting us nowhere.—l am, etc., RATEPAYER X 66.
