EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” APRIL 17, 1904. Karly municipal election results, for areas where there was only an unopposed candidate, showed that Karori, at Wellington, had not then been merged with the city. The laying of the foundation stone of the new convent in Broad Street in Palmerston North was to bo carried out by Archbishop Redwood. Miss Belle Napier had given a recital in the Lyceum Theatre. Tho entertainment was of the monologue order. The cost of a smallpox scare in New Zealand was said to. bo £20,000. A new motor bus service was to be instituted between the railway station and Terrace End. Football sports and a seven-aside tournament had been held at the Showgrounds as an opening run for the season. The complctitions also included a place-kicking competition. The Manawatu Hockey Association were to use the A. and P. grounds for their games through the season. Prices were high at tho Feilding sale. Among tho quotations were: Lambs, 8s to 9s 9d; ewes* 9s to 11s 4d ; wethers, 10s to 143 sd; ' Avcaner cattle, 203 to 36?"; 22year steers, £3 8s 6d. Akc ake was being grown commercially as a garden tree in Palmerston North. It was claimed that they wore blight,proof, besides being quick in growth and hardy. . Some 37 years before, it. was reported, Russia had ** sold Alaska to America for a little under £1,500,000. The Russian fleet had been so depleted that it Avas thought hopeless to rely on sea power, so that Russia’s hopes were in her army, said a London message.
