RACING NEWS

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) L. J. Ellis’s four wins on the opening day at Greymouth, which were followed by a brace on Saturday, gives the southern horseman a clear-cut lead over K. Voitro. Manuiri boro out the contention that weight will not stop a good horso by carrying 11.12 to victory at Hastings on Saturday. The opposition was not particularly strong. At the Woodvillo meeting in February the Lord Quox filly Marao Quex gavo indication of being an early winner, but it was not till Staturday that she got on the winning list. When Peggy’s Joy ran a great second to Palm at Woodvillo she was ridden by the Awapuni lightweight L. 11. Jones. Although Peggy’s Joy was engaged in the Juvenile Handicap at Hastings on Saturday, Jones took the ride on Talari to bring the Chief Ruler filly home a winner. This apprentice is showing a fund of promise.

The Marton horseman, B. H. Morris, enjoyed a good innings in the saddle at tho Hawke’s Bay fixture on Saturday, when he saluted tho judge three times. He was narrowly beaten for first place in the principal handicap. Ho wound up the day by sooring on Speed who is proving to be one of the most consistent horses on the circuit.

Cotefield might well be termed a gay deceiver, for ho shows ilashes of brilliance only to fail to reproduce it. Prior to being sold lo a Gioborne sportsman he ran some fair races when trained at Podding, but did not stay on well. He displayed a emart turn of speed at Awapuni prior to the autumn fixture and looked like a winner two furlongs from home on flic opening day, but ho ran very wide turning for home. He failed to repeat the effort on the succeeding day, and was again beaten out of a place at Hastings on Saturday. As the Ashhurst meeting on Anniversary Day Emotion was tried over a mile and a quarter to give an excellent account of himself. Since then he lias been raced over varying distances, but was once again a contestant over a mile ail'd a quarter at Hastings on Saturday. While the chestnut was beaten into third place, the dividing margins were only half a neck and a head. Custodian gave evidence at Riccarton, as he did at Trcntham, that ho should stay when racing next season. He still shows a tendency to climb, but with age _ he should get more control over his stride. The Masquerader, the victor over Silver Ring (maybe luckily) cost his present owner 310 guineas and has won close on £IOOO in stakes. The Masquerader showed excellent form in the Challenge Stakes in addition to hie win in the Great Easter Handicap. , Booster, who has been retired several times only to go cn like the babbling brook, was a competitor at the Greyinouth meeting on Friday. He is etated to ha\e run a good race for about five furlongs when hie condition gave out. Quietly has proved herself to be a better proposition for her new owner than she did for Mr W. R. Kemball. On the opening day at Greymoulh she made two appearances for two wins, and on Saturday she added the final event to her credit. Such is the luck of the game. Jonathan followed up hie Ellerslie successes by adding the Foley Memorial dicap at Avondale on Saturday. The Thespian gelding showed that ho is a horse above the average by running the mile and a quartor in 2.4 1-5 and having the steadier of 9.12 on his back. A rather surprising result at the Avondale meeting was the victory of Puss Moth in the Railway Handicap, for the Catmint gelding has given his best performances when the sting i* out of the ground. Possibly, the fact, that Voitre was in the saddle played a material part towards the victory. A deputation representing the lakapuna Jockey Club met the committee of the Auckland Racing Club to discuss terms on which the Auckland Racing Club would allow the Takapuna Club to race at Ellerslie, but no decision was reached, and the matter was adjourned. Mr E. W. Alison, president of tho Takapuna Club, said later that they had received no intimation that the club would not bo allowed to race again at Takapuna. The conference with the Auckland Racing Club was merely provisional. Tho Takapuna Jockey Club has been racing at Devonport for 53 years. AVONDALE MEETING. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-MORROW. TROTTING.

ATTRACTION AT ASHBURTON. The presence of Harold Logan at Awapuni on Saturday proved an undoubted attraction to many, and Pahnerstonians will now take a keener interest in the future activities of the champion in his races with Walla Walla. Southern reports state that the Australian champion is in first class order and ready to run the face of his life. In the last match race at Addington he struck himself on the fetlock joint, but ho did no real damage and is as fit as ever ho was.

W. McKay, who drove Walla Walla in his engagement, was very disappointed with the result of the race, but, like u good sportsman, he blames liimsclf as much as anyone else for tho position that the Australian horse got into. Had lie been able to get clear over the last halfmile McKay is still satisfied that ho would have made a lace of it, and the 29 3-5 sec. Harold Logan registered over the last quarter would have been improved upon. The Australian driver makes no excuses, but he is satisfied that Walla Walla is still tho great horso he always thought he was. McKay, who is as good a driver as wo have had in New Zealand (an exchange remarks), says he would have helped to make the pace had he been ablo to do it. Tho way in which tho race was run and the position ho got into prevented him from racing his horse. He attaches no blame on anyone. The luck of tho running was against him. Walla Walla will make his public appearanco on a grass track for the first time in New Zealand when he steps out in the Durbar Lodgo Handicap at Ashburton. He is not altogether a stranger to grass tracks, for he holds a record of 3min. 18sec. on the Goulbourn course when ho won tho Goulbourn Cup. He registered this time from 132 yards behind. This was not altogether the ideal going for a pacer, but Walla Walla wont tho last half mile in lmin. lsee. This is considered a good enough performance to justify Ills owner in starting the champion on a grass track at Ashburton.

The Australian pacer Auburn Lad has come through his racing at Addington without material harm, and his appearance at Ashburton will bo eagerly looked forward to. A fine bold paoor, the grass track will not presont any great difficulties, and ho may be expected to race all tho way with horses he is sot to moot. As both Auburn Lad and Walla Walla will bo engaged on this occasion, the owner, L. S. Martin, will drive Walla Walla, and McKay will drive his own horse, Auburn Lad.

Tho promising South Island pacer Blue Mountain has been acquired by tho Auckland sportsman Mr M. J. Moodabe, and she is now an inmato of J. S. Shaw’s stable at Addington. Her performances during the last twelve months have been oxcellent, and she gives promise of reaching tho highest classes. Blue Mountain has been a very consistent performer since the season opened, and out of fourteen starts he has gained four firsts, five seconds, and two thirds, and has only been unplaced on three occasions. It should not be long before Mr Moodabe gets a return on his purchase money, as the grey gelding is in great order to commence a preparation. CONTRAST IN PRICES.

Probably few of the patrons present at Awapuni on Saturday would be aware that Bell o’ Mine, who ran third in the Manawatu Trotting Cup, is a daughter of Wairoa 8011, whose name was brought into prominence some few years ago by reason of a tremondous dividend she paid at Nelson. If memory serves aright, Wairoa Bell was entrusted with ono or, perhaps two, tickets on the totalisator, and the dividend she paid ran over four figures; indeed, tho odd money was such that it alone would have been a lucrative dividend. Many stories surrounding the history of the mure, etc., were recounted at the time, but while her performances may have been such that she failed to attract support, it is apparent that her daughter ranks high in the opinion of tho handicapper, for sho was made the backmarkcr in Saturday’s field. Unlike l.er darn’s, the dividend Bell o’ Mine paid for third was infinitesmal.
