SEASON’S COMPETITIONS

The Feilding Lawn Tennis Chib’s men’s singles championship was decided on Saturday afternoon, when IV. Boddy beat K. G. Salmond after a hard game. Salmond took the first set 6—4, his driving gaining him the advantage. In the next set Boddv developed good defensive work at the net to take the set 6—3. Hard play marked the third set, first one, then the other holding the advantage. Boddy finally prevailed to take the honours by ending the set 7 —5. The Oroua Bowling Club held a progressive pairs tourney on Saturday afternoon, a large number of members taking part. Aitken won the skips’ section with 3J wins, while Hamilton took the honours among the leads with 3J wins also. The Wanganui and Manawatn live stock agents staged a friendly encounter at the Oroua green on Saturday afternoon, the visitors comprising J. G. Anderson, IV. Falconer, R. Mitchie and F. Moffit (skip) defeating S. Fowler, A. J. Kellow, C. Bryan and A. E. Iverslake (skip) by 23 points to 14. RUGBY FOOTBALL. PRACTICE MATCHES. Both the Feilding and Feilding Old Boys Rugby football clubs had two teams each engaged on Saturday afternoon in matches designed for practice and to give the selectors an opportunity to select the teams for the season’s work ahead. At Johnston Park, the Feilding Old Boys junior team encountered hot opposition in the Rtanivay junior team which ran up 21 points to 3. Only tries counted, the ground not being equipped with goal posts for tire game. At Awahuri, the Old Boys senior team reversed the result, defeating the Awahuri side by 14 points to 9. The amber and blacks sent two teams afield, one to Sandon and the other to Rata.

At Rata, the visitors had a runaway win, piling up 40 points to 9. At Sandon, the Te Kawau Sub-Union players gave the amber and blacks a harder job, lint the verdict came out in Feilding’s favour by 6 points to 3.

Feilding Club players are again very keen and are confidently awaiting the season’s battles. Next Saturday, the two fifteens will again be mixed to engage Apiti and Stanway, while the final match will see the two sides opposing each other to allow the final selection of the first fifteen to be made.

MAGISTRATE’S COURT RETURNS.

INCREASE IN REVENUE

For the quarter ended March 31, 1934, the revenue at the Feilding Magistrate’s Court increased by just on £26 over the figures for the same period in 1933, the figures being £169 and £143 17s 6d respectively. During the quarter under review, the number of sittings of the Court for civil cases was five, with a similar number for the 1933 quarter, while criminal cases totalled 18 in each quarter. Plaints entered numbored 114 (71) and the total amount sued for was £1474 17s 2d (£1270 6s 4d). Distress warrants issued totalled two (one), while judgment summonses increased to 10 from six in March, 1933. Cases against males aggregated 52 (60) and against females there were three in both the 1934 and 1933 periods. In the civil business of the Court, the cases disposed of amounted to 52 (71) and the total amount claimed in the cases tried was £630 0s 7d (£BO9 12s 9d). The amount received in the cases tried was £460 0s 7d, against £719 19s in the 71 cases tried in the 1933 quarter.
