WOMEN’S WORLD

W.C.T.TJ. MONTHLY MEETING. Miss M. Moore presided over the monthly meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, held yesterday afternoon, when three new members, Mrs Stenberg, Mrs Forneaux and Mrs Howan, were welcomed. Two visitors, Mrs Patten, of South Wellington, and Mrs Patten, of Palmerston North, were also given a welcome. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Pam and W. McConnon. Mrs Ritchie conducted the devotional exercises and gave the scientific fact, while a motion of sympathy was ex- • tended Mrs T. T. Kerslake in the death of her son, the members standing m The president announced that the world convention of the W.C.T.U. would he held in Stockholm this year and that Misses McLay (Dominion organisers) would represent New Zealand. The secretary was requested to forward them a letter conveying greetings and good wishes from t-he Palmerston North branch. Miss Moore also expressed the pleasure of the members at the return to their midst of Miss V. Wilson, the treasurer, who had been absent for some weeks through illness. With regard to the fair held in Wellington, Miss Moore reported that £l5O had been raised by adult branches and she thanked all members who had forwarded gifts, Reports of the convention held in Wellington were given by Mrs E. A. Birdsall and Miss Moore. The convention had been presided over by the Dominion president Mrs T. E. Taylor, and 160 delegates had been present. A letter had been read regarding the AVorld’s Pan-Pacific Conference, and Mrs Taylor had been appointed to represent New Zealand. A letter of thanks had been sent to the conference of Justices of the Peace in Auckland for its favourable consideration of the matter of women police. A deputation headed by Mrs Taylor, and consisting of executive officers and heads of departments, had waited on the Prime Minister (Mr Forbes) in connection with three matters —women police duties, criminal offences against children, and films. The deputation had been sympathetically received and their requests favourably considered. There were now 5009 members of the W.C.T.U. in New Zealand ; 125 adult unions, 55 “Y” branches, 2045 children in the Band of Hope, and 2836 children on the cradle roll. A feature of the convention had been Mrs Taylor’s address. A special peace day had been appointed for May, and this would be celebrated by Palmerston North at the next meeting. Mrs Hardisty expressed the thanks of members to Mrs Birdsall and Miss Moore for their reports, and the meeting closed with prayer by Mrs S. Sorensen. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs R. Allen and Miss C. Jamieson. CROQUET. MANAWATU ASSOCIATION’S MATCHES. The Manawatu Croquet Association held a gala day last Thursday for the conclusion of their season. Competitions were played throughout the afternoon, the winners being:—Mrs Williams, take-off; Mrs Morgan, angles; Mrs Simpson, break laying; Mrs Fuller, ladder; Mesdames Dickel and Langford, progressive. Mrs Fuller (the president) presented the association trophies as follow : —Mrs Gambrill, silver medal; Mrs Petrie, A grade silver button; Mrs Morgan, B grade silver button ; Mrs Bowater, C grade silver button; banner for inter-club matches, Feeding Club; holders for the season, Pollock Stars, Mesdames Bryan and Tucker; Corbridge Stars, Mesdames Bryan and Tucker; Brighton Mallets, Mesdames Blakie and Picard; Bennett Buttons, Mesdames Bowater and Hutton. ; Mrs Brown, vice-president of the Northern Club, presented Mrs Fuller and Mrs Parkes with a bouquet of roses, concluding a pleasant afternoon.

WEDDING. • FLANAGAN—WILLIAMS. The wedding took place on April 4, at St. Patrick’s Church, Palmerston North, of Nancy Edrie, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Alfred Williams, “Ponana,” Wanstead, and Mr Bede Harrington Flanagan, a popular boxer, of Palmerston North. Rev. Father Jansen officiated. As she entered the church on the arm of her father the bride looked charming in her model frock of rust wool matalasse, with hat to tone; also skin shoes. Attending as matron of honour, Mrs Nielsen chose a dainty black georgette and lace frock with a black chip straw hat. She also wore a string of rock crystal beads, the gift of the bridegroom. Mr Bernard AVilliams. brother of the bride, was best man. A' reception was afterwards held at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. H. Taylor, Ferguson Street. Mr and Mrs .Williams received the guests, Mrs Williams wearing a frock of windswept velvet. Mrs Flanagan, mother of the bridegroom, wore a smart black ensemble with matching hat. The happy couple received many handsome presents, cheques and telegrams. Among the gifts was a beautiful twotiered wedding cake, the gift of Mr and Mrs Walter Scott, of Wanstead. When the bride appeared for travelling she was wearing also a beautiful musquash coat, the gift of the bridegroom. Her gift to him was a travelling rug. They, intend to make a tour of the North Island. GIRL GUIDES’ EXECUTIVE. MONTHLY MEETING HELD. The monthly meeting of the execu-’ tive of the Palmerston North Girl Guides’ Association was held yesterday. Those present were Mesdames G. A. Eliott (chairwoman), Whyte, Stewart, Aitchison, Roberts and Miss Warren. The resignations as Guiders of Misses Ellett and J. Revere, of Feilding, were received with regret, the secretary being authorised to forward letters of appreciation from the executive for their services. The programme for the shield competitions was submitted and further arrangements made for holding the competitions on the Sportsground. It was arranged that the usual combined service of Scouts and Guides be held at the War Memorial on Anzac Day. ALL SAINTS’ HOME.
