LATE SIR A. D. DOBSON.
TRIBUTES TO MEMORY. Per Press Association. NELSON, March 12. Many tributes were paid at to-day’s meeting of the South Island Motor Union to the services rendered to motoring by the late pa.tron, Sir Arthur Dudley Dobson. The chairman, Dr. Gibbs, expressed thanks to the Canterbury Association for providing the delegates with an opportunity of paying tributes to Sir Arthur personally on the occasion of his 90th birthday. Mr F. W. Freeman said all delegates revered Sir Arthur’s memory. It was a coincidence that a meeting in Nelson should bo passing such a motion when his great services were rendered as an engineer and surveyor in the Nelson district at a time when construction, pioneering, exploration and settlement were all important in a young province. Sir Arthur stood out as a pathfinder between Nelson, the West Coast and Canterbury. “He was typical of all the traditions of the British,” said Mr Freeman. “For what the British flag stands for is what Sir Arthur Dobson stood for.” Mr R. P. Furness (Marlborough) said that, in common with all members of the South Island Motor Union, news of the passing of Sir Arthur came as a shock to Marlborough. For indomitable courage and ability to surmount difficulties, New Zealand had not known his equal. Similar tributes were paid by many others.
