‘QUAKE AFTERMATH.

A THOUSAND CHIMNEYS,

PALMERSTON NORTH REPAIRS

Upwards of 1000 chimneys are now estimated to have been damaged in Palmerston North by the earthquake last week. Notifications have been received by the Palmerston North City Council m respect of 422 dwellings. Fifty of the houses for which authority is sought to undertake chimneys repairs are situated in Ferguson Street. There are 37 of the total number in College Street, 14 in Worcester Street and 17 in Hereford Street.

School buildings in the city have been inspected by Mr R. Savage, architect for the Education Department. Mr Savage left to-day for Wanganui to confer there with the Education Board’s architect. REQUESTS BY PAHIATUA. Per. Press Association. PAHIATUA, March 12. A deputation of representative business people, property owners, Farmers’ Union members, and soldier settlers, headed by the Mayor (Mr J. D. Wilson) made strong representations to Hon. E. A. Ransom and Hon. R. Masters this afternoon for Government assistance for earthquake sufferers. The deputation asked that the Public Works Department take over the reconstruction of chimneys throughout the district and ensure their completion before the winter. Financial assistance also was requested for the principal losers and those in the greatest distress on similar lines to the assistance given to Hawke’s Bay in Both Ministers expressed sympathy with the district, recognising that Paliiatua was probaUly hit harder than any other centre. They promised to make strong representations to CabTlVe Ministers had previously made an inspection of the business area ’quake damage.

REPORT ON BUILDINGS

DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL.

Per Press Association. PAHIATUA, March 13. At a meeting of the Borough Council last night a detailed report by the two Public Works Department officers on the state of the business premises damaged by the earthquake was submitted. At the outset a motion by a councillor that the discussion be taken in committee was moved. He said: “The report is for the council on the state of property of individuals. Publication in many cases might bo injurious. It is not for general information. The motion was carried. It was resolved to negotiate with an outside architect for the services of a building inspector to peruse the plans and specifications of the proposed reconstruction works. The fire brigade was heartily thanked for its splendid service on the night of the ’quake. ■ Two men are now taking a tally of the damaged chimneys in the borough.

DAMAGE AT EKETAHUNA

ESTIMATED AT £IO,OOO.

Per Press Association. EKETAHUNA, March 13. At a meeting of the Borough Council last night, the Mayor stated that 90 per cent, of the chimneys in this district were affected hy the ’quake, as against 60 per cent in Pahiatua. The total damage is now estimated at £lO,The council decided to apply to the Public Works Department for an engineer to inspect all brick buildings immediately. Appreciation was expressed that the Mayor of Napier had extended his sympathy and offered the services of his staff, if required.
