DENIAL OF CHARGE.
MR MELLON INDIGNANT. WASHINGTON, March 11. Mr A. W. Mellon issued a lengthy statement to-day in answer to the charge of tax evasion by the AttorneyGeneral, Mr H. S. Cummings. Mr Mellon characterised the action as “politics of the crudest sort” and entered a blanket denial that he had defrayed the Government in any way. He said that he welcomed the bringing up of the issue, which, he hoped, would put an end to the campaign of “character wrecking and abuse, of which, he said, he had been a victim for many months.
It was reported yesterday that the Attorney-General had announced that proceedings against a former Secretary of the Treasury (Mr A. W. Mellon), Mr James J. Walker, former Mayor of New York, Mr Thomas Lamont, partner in J'. P. Morgan and Company, and Mr Thomas Sidle, a noted Cleveland lawyer and partner of a former Secretary for War, Mr N. D. Baker, for alleged tax evasion, tfould be presented to grand juries soon. The case against Mr Mellon, it was understood, had been under investigation for some time.
