(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, March 8.
A meeting of the Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present the Mayor (Mr E. Butt) and Ore A. E. Hyde, W. Clayton, T. C. Thwaites, J. Curran, junr., R. R. Lind, A. G. Mason, J. A. Roach and J. Curran, senr. The Municipal Association forwarded a report of the subcommittee in regard to Local Body Taxation. The committee’s findings are that hospital ana charitable aid charges should be transferred from the local authorities and made a charge on the general Government revenue. In respect of municipal taxation, it was decided that the system of rating on annual value is to be preferred, provided that it is accompanied by a surtax on property not adequately used by the owner; that adequate and efficient provision should be made for the application of the principle of betterment in _ respect of municipal works. The executive has also asked the Government to make the question of rating an order of reference for the Local Body Commission which it proposes to set up, with a view to evolving a system of rating equitable to all classes of ratepayers. The ranger reported that for the month of February ho had impounded eight head of stock and removed off streets three head. A deputation representing relief workers who are ratepayers, asked that they be given relief in payment of rates. They asked to be allov'ed to work out the amount of the liability, or the council to grant relief in any w'ay they can sec clear. r lhe Mayor said the council sympathised with the deputation, but could not promise any relief this year. The Presbyterian Church held their annual harvest festival services on Sunday, and on Mondav evening a very successful social and salife of work and produce was held. Enjoyable items were rendered by the Foxton Church choir, and_ Rev. A. Fotheringham gave an interesting tia\el talk on Madagascar. _ Advice was received in Shannon on Alonday that the youngest son, aged 8 years, of Mr and Airs W. J. Law, Te Puke, had died in an Auckland hospital after a short illness. Mrs Law will be remembered by many local residents as she was before her marriage a popular member of the Shannon School teaching staff and is a sister of Mrs J. A. Wilkinson.
