DISPUTE OVER CURRENCY.

PAYMENT OF CREW. CHRISTCHURCH. Feb. 2. A dispute between the English crew of the new motor ship Breeze and the owners about the payment of wages occurred when the crew attended at the Government shipping office to be signed off. The men claimed that the articles provided that they were to receive English conditions and wages, but the representative of the owners refused their demand on the ground that the articles provided for payment in New Zealand currency.

The men supported their case by pointing out that where advances in wages had been made before sailing the amount was paid in English currency and deducted at the same rate, and that it would have paid them better to draw as much advance money a.s possible in th e circumstances. The owners refused to accede to the men’s claim and the men finally signed off under protest.
