FOXTON.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Feb. 2. At tho conclusion of the choir practice on Thursday evening, members of the Presbyterian Church choir made a small presentation to Miss L. Patterson, oiganist of the Church. Mrs Gascoyne, who has been spending a holicliy wit'i her sister, Mrs D. It. Ogiivy, has returned to Wellington. On Thursday evening the Foxton Surf and Life Saving Club held a carnival at the baths, tho results being:—Boys’ learner race: C. Evans 1, T. Evcrton 2, P. Baker 3; boys’ 25 yards, 15 years and under: P. Barrat 1, A. McArtney 2, T. Coley 3; girls’ 25 yards, 15 years and under: P. Currie 1, E. Walls 2, N. Barry 3; men’s 25 yards handicap: A. Baird 1, G. Hirini 2, M. Baird 3; boys’ dive: J. McArtney 1, A .McArtney 2, V. Bowden 3; cigarette race: D. Vertongen 1, L. Coley 2, C. Baird 3; ladies’ dive: E. Walls and M. {tarry, tied, 1, P. Curry 3; men’s 50 yards handicap: A. Baird 1, M. Baird 2, G. Hirini 3; men’s pillow fight: A. Baird 1, M. Baird 2; dual relay: G. Hirini and F. Roore 1; relay race: Town Midgets y. Surf Club Midgets, won by Town Midgets; men’s divo: D. Vertongen 1, M. Baird 2; ribbon dive: A. Baird 1, D. Vertongen 2; boys’ pillow fight: N. Walls 1, D. Vertongen 2. At the annual meeting of tho Foxton Silver Band, j presided over by Mr S. E. Cowley (chairman), the conductor (Mr Chas. A. Thomas) of Palmerston North, reported that during tho year the band had made a fresh start and many now members without previous musical knowledge of any kind were initiated. There were 14 young Foxtonites who had made good under tho free tuition and of whom their parents might feel proud. The roll of players at present numbered 26. He stated that there was a possibility of his securing employment in Foxton in tho very near future, when all his spare time would be used to further tho interests of tho band, and in teaching another class of learners, so that there would be plenty of material to draw from, in raising the band to a higher grade. In accordance with the conductor’s wishes ( a sub-committee consisting of Messrs Christensen, B. Hinds, G. F. Smith, W. M. Thomas, the chairman, secretary and treasurer, was spt up to go into the question of raising funds. Mr H. Osborne (treasurer) intimated that he would be leaving Foxton early in March on a visit to England and it was decided to appoint _Mr W. H. Read to fill the vacancy during his absence.
