ITALIAN PROTEST

3.45 P.M. EDITION

THE WESTRALIAN RIOTS. DEMAND FOR RETRIBUTION. (United Press Association—By' Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received February 3, 1.55 p.m. ROME, Feb. 2. La Tribuna, protesting against the riots in Western Australia, says: “Australian Trade Unionism is so nar-row-minded that non-Australians are considered mere foreigners instead of fellow workers. Australian nationalism is following a narrow, path, meaning that an island ns big as a continent is being closed to foreigners. “The Premier, Mr Collier’s, declarations for a prevention of the recurrence are insufficient. Those responsible must be punished and reparations paid' and guarantees given for the future safety- of foreigners. It is incredible that while the Singapore Conference is planning the defence of Australia and New Zealand, which Japan desires to conquer as an outlet for her surplus population, the Dpminions should give way to xenophobia thereby offending the feelings ofEuropean settlers, losing sight of the greater danger.” The Tribuna adds that as a reward for their Herculean efforts in colonising Queensland and .other parts of the continent Italians have been forced to face the consequences of sectarian Trade Unionism.
