TEN YEARS’ SENTENCE.
AMERICAN “BEER BARON.” EVASION OF TAXES. Received December 2, 1.10 p.xn. NEW YORK. Dec. 1. A victory for the Federal Government comparable with the AI Capone case occurred to-day with the conviction of “Watery” Gordon, a New Jersey “beer baron” for evading one million dollars in income taxes. He was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment, and fined 20,000 dollars and 60,000 dollars costs. The testimony during the trial revealed the illicit operations of many large breweries, the employment of strong squads to compel the sale of their products and immense profits. Gordon was living in extreme luxury but making no tax returns. The defence contended that their client was a public benefactor and gave employment to thousands of persons.
