The first day’s play in the Hawke Cup match saw Nelson, the holders, with a substantial first innings lead over Marlborough, the challengers. The latter, in the first innings, made 158 (M. Neal 19, Hastilow 44, A. Neale 30, O’Sullivan 18). Newman took four wickets for 42, and Freeman three for 38. At stumps Nelson had made 296 for seven wickets (Ivinzett not out 160, Neale 15, A.
