That the council might take the small attendance as a vote of confidence was a remark made by the Mayor (Mr A. E. The proposal sponsored by Cr. L. H. Best, in the Horowhenua County Council, to institute one general rate for the Avhole county, in place of tne existing system of separate rates for the four ridings, was put before a meeting of ratepayers held under the auspices of the Levin and Olrau branches of the Farmers’ Union on Wednesday evening, in Levin. Within the space of a few minutes there Avere some 20 cars, lorries etc., as many cyclists and quite a number of pedestrians forced to “cool their heels” AA-hile a stationary train occupied the crossing sufficiently long to enable an incoming train to pass into the station and another shunting engine further dorvn the yards to clear a loop line for it to back into.

Twelve nurses in uniform from the Public Hospital Avere actively engaged in the city area for tAVO hours from 9 a.m. to-day collecting funds on behalf of the District Nursing Guild. Their red capes gave a distinctive dash of colour and the response of the public Avas good in vieAV of the present conditions. At the conclusion of the morning’s activities the nurses Avere provided Avith morning tea at the All Saints’ Parish Hall by members of the District Nursing Guild committee, Mrs M. Aitchison and Mrs E. Bett, members of the committee, directing arrangements. The nurses were thanked by Mrs Aitchison for their splendid assistance prior to their return to the Hospital. Collecting activities were also carried on at Terrace End and at Takaro.
