HOROWHENUA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) OTAKI, Dec. 1. Mr and Mra E. Ponman, of Otaki, are at present on holiday in Auckland. . The death occurred last night of Mr Tahiwi, one of the best known Otaki natives, and one who had lived in this town for many years. The late Mr Tahiwi, wh i was 86 years of age, leaves a grown-uo family, Kingi, Henaro, Pirimi; Rawiri, Mrs To Hana, Mrs Roiri, and Miss Wone Tahiwi, to mourn their loss. • On Tuesday evening a local resident had hi.-; slumbers disturbed by a noise on the roof of his house. Thinking the cause might possibly bo burglars, ho carefully planned a capture. He opened the skylight and made a grab at the intrudor, only to ascertain that ho had a full-grown opossum in his grasp. The animal also took a hold and the householder was both bitten and scratched.
At the Courthouse yesterday the commission set up under the provisions of tho Urban Farm Lands Rating Act, to decide objections to the urban farm land list of Otaki, met. It consisted of Mr J. L. Stout, 3..YJ,, Mr W. T. Strand and Mr T. O’Rourke, the latter acting on behalf of the Borough Council.
The second of a series of evening sports meetings was held on the domain on Wednesday evening. A meeting of the Relief Committee was held yesterday afternoon, Rev. Father Riordan presiding. Tho secretary (Rev. Mr Ayrton) reported that the funds wero low, and it was therefore decided not to issue a meat ration this week, but to give a substantial one during Christmas week. Mr F. J. Ryder promised to make application to the Palmerston North Hospital Board for assistance.
