CONSPIRACY CHARGE.

SALVAGE CORPS OFFICER. Received December 2, 12.55 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 1. During the trial of Captain Brynmor Aliles, chief officer of the London Salvage Corps, who has been remanded on bail on a charge of conspiracy with Leopold Harris to prevent the due administration of justice, at Bow Street, the prosecution’s counsel said that ever since 1930 Aliles had allegedly been in the pay of Leopold Harris for the purpose of favouring him in the business of assessor. When the prosecution for the fire conspiracy became imminent in September, 1932, he was deep in the confidence of those having charge of the proceedings and at a time when secrecy was paramount he betrayed their plans to Harris for money. Aliles received a salary of £IOSO, free of income tax, free quarters for himself and his family and light, fuel and a manservant and thus should have been ensured of being above this sort of temptation. He had received £25 a month from Harris with an extra sum for special services. Harris also guaranteed Aliles a banking account for £IOOO. The case was adjourned till December 11.

Captain Aliles, who is aged 38, had a distinguished war record. He won the Alilitary Cross and was twice mentioned in despatches. Leopold Harris was the chief figure in the sensational case in London a few months ago in which eventually sentences were passed on a group of persons accused of deliberately burning -buildings and stock to obtain the insurances.
